My car's been impounded! How do I get it back?

My car's been impounded! How do I get it back?

Bring $25, your driver's license and proof of ownership to the Records Department for a release. Then take it to the appropriate impound yard and present it to them. You will be responsible for towing and storage fees from that company. If there is a "hold" placed on your car, it will not be released to you until the officer or detective clears it for release. If your car was involved in a serious accident, or at the scene of a crime, it may be held by the Accident Investigator, the Detective in charge, or the Identification Unit. If your vehicle was driven by someone arrested for a narcotics violation, it may be forfeited by the Narcotics Enforcement Section.

If your proof of ownership is INSIDE the car, you may obtain a property release from the Records Department, present it to the impound yard personnel, and they will allow you to retrieve your documents from the car. Bring it back to the police station for a vehicle release.
