I've called the police! How long before I get the police here?

Calls for service are prioritized according to the seriousness of the call and the availability of police units on the road. Calls for service classified for immediate response may involve injuries that require medical attention and major crimes in progress. Officers will be cleared from other calls to respond to these types of calls. Depending on the type of complaint, calls for service can also be classified as "expedite," "routine," "DPR" or "referral". We realize it is frustrating when the police take a long time to respond to your call, or when we cannot give you an accurate estimate of when we will respond, but life is unpredictable and officers assigned to your call may be redirected to respond to a more serious call. The Pontiac Police Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year so your call for service will be answered.

How do I make a citizen complaint against an officer?

You start by speaking with a supervisor at the front desk of the Police Department. With the assistance of the front desk supervisor, you will figure out which officer you had a problem with, what shift he or she is working, and who their supervisor is. The immediate supervisor of the officer will attempt to resolve the conflict to your satisfaction according to departmental policy. If it cannot be resolved at that level, the supervisor will fill out a citizen complaint package and schedule an appointment with our Internal Affairs Division (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) at a time that is most convenient for you. You will be requested to fill out a complaint form. If you are unable to do so, the supervisor will complete one for you and forward it to the Internal Affairs Division, who will meet with you at your appointment and proceed from there.

Can I make a report with the Pontiac Police Department if the crime or accident occurred outside the city?

No. Even though you may live here, we can only take reports of crimes or accidents that occur within the city limits. You will have to contact the jurisdiction where the incident occurred to file a police report. If it is an incident that is not serious in nature, the police department in the jurisdiction in which it occurred may have a program similar to the Pontiac Police Department's in which you can file the report right over the telephone.

What's the difference between light and dark blue uniform shirts?

Light blue shirts are assigned to our Police Cadets, who assist the police department by taking reports, filing paperwork, processing prisoners and answering the telephones. If a police cadet obtains enough college credits, they have the opportunity to become police officers. Sometimes our communications specialists will also wear light blue. Police Officers, Detectives and Sergeants usually wear dark blue shirts. Members of the Command Staff usually wear white shirts, but they can also be seen in dark blue shirts if the need exists for them to wear blue.

How much will my bond be?

Felony charges and domestic violence offenses will not have a bond. Misdemeanor offense bonds will depend on a number of factors, including the type of offense and the state of the defendant. You may contact the 50th District Court or the City Attorney's office for specific information.
