Children are exposed to violence in the streets, at school, and in their own homes.  They observe images of violence on television, in movies, and in video games. More importantly, these children may imitate what they have experienced, becoming offenders themselves.

Children exposed to violence become depressed, feel hopeless, helpless, anxious, fear, rage and aggression.  These same children become adults who reflect these same emotions. In short, exposure to violence can result in the total upheaval of a child's entire life.  The CURVE project was developed out of a response to the community's need to assist these children and their families.

The CURVE project officially began November 1, 2004.  The program is operated from the Pontiac Police Department and primarily receives referrals from first responder officers.  A contractual case manager oversees the program, making appropriate referrals to established agencies throughout the county. Interventions are designed with the special needs of the referred children in mind.  A monthly review meeting acts as a checks and balance for the program, ensuring that the initial goals are being met for each child.  Transportation will be provided for families meeting our guidelines.  Above all else, the CURVE project is FREE to residents of Pontiac.

If you would like to refer a child please contact Linda Gutierrez at 248 758-3305.  If you would like information on developing a CURVE project in your community please contact Detective Terri Covington at 248 758-3307.
